Commissoners to consider new travel policy

The Tippecanoe County commissioners will consider adopting a new travel policy for the county this morning.

The discussion is a result of the Indiana State Board of Accounts's having cited the commissioners for violating the county's travel policy in July 2006. The commissioners had then agreed to reimburse Diane Hawkins, the executive director of the management of information technology services department, for a trip her husband had taken to and from Chicago.

Hawkins had attended a conference there. Rather than pay $40 a day to park her car, Hawkins had her husband drop her off and return later in the week to retrieve her.

She had asked to be reimbursed for her husband's trips even though the county's travel policy only allows employees to be reimbursed for trips they take themselves.
